Learning diary (teaching practice 5)
Date: 21.11.2024
As final teaching practice, I have chosen teaching topic as
" understanding of fundamental rights under the constitution in Finland ".
Constructivism learning theory was applied to prepare for teaching practice. Teaching materials are prepared both with text and pictures with keywords of fundamental rights in Finland. Texts and explanation were prepared mainly for assistant to support correct information, if they need to practically read and help to talk with special needs students. I have shown Yle areena video related in constitution and fundamental rights and my own teaching materials consisting with pictures during teaching practice. Visualized teaching skill and materials were essential for them to have idea and recognize topics. Student's previous life experiences and learning experiences from comprehensive school were considered as acquired knowledge. It was good experiences how special needs students tried to learn relevances between picture and keyword cognitively. and then how they explain or reflect on their learning were meaningful when following their meta cognitive skills. Although I gave them inquiry question to students by showing fundamental rights image presentation, it seems difficult for them to understand the words. It need to study repeatedly to memories visually by comparing picture and keywords for the next time if possible. Their cognitive skills to concept on fundamental rights are required to enhance by doing methods repeatedly.
Making own poster of fundamental rights under the constitution in Finland
student's own picture, fundamental rights related in pictures, text, example were already made for teaching. Making poster was good to practice kinesthetic skill to make poster.
Observation
Student's own creative thinking and performance should be encouraged while teaching practice. And poster can use again as teaching materials to classify fundamental rights according to categories if possible such as different kind of freedom, protection, voting rights, social benefits and exception and so on. Memory game and quiz with picture will be possible to learn by using game method to have frequent chances to activate their cognitive and visualization memory by doing repeatedly. Student's own reflections and self recognition are highly dependent to assistants and teacher as well to learn learning topics.
Closing,
It was personally meaningful to teach Finnish fundamental rights in Finnish. It was certain experiences to think as teacher to have keen knowledge to explain to students in Finnish to give them integrity for learning. I could felt my competence to teach topic related in social studies in Finland are improved while teaching practice. I had trials to improve good mindset and competence skills such as how to approach about language difficulties to teach in Finnish as foreigner and how to learn teaching topic in Finnish before teaching as well.
