Teaching lesson: Pedagogical models and teaching methods ( Group3)
"Group 3: What are pedagogical models?
How can they help you to choose the teaching methods?
Choose at least one model that you use in your teaching task!"
My second teaching day was on 5.10.2022 via webinar.
Group 3's teaching lesson's preparation used to be happen 3 times via teams meeting at 5am. And we had
chat times freely according to member's available time schedules.
: 1. Research on pedagogical models and teaching methods
2. Chosen proper way to approach pedagogical models and teaching methods
- Giving pre-task ( learn 'flapping bird' as origami model and teach to other, fill out questionnaires )
3. Discussion topics and possible to use link such as Padlet, Kahoot, teams link etc
Why pre-task is needed?
Pre-task is gateway to know for participants learning difficulties or problem, teaching resources, age and
duration with our idea of 'flapping bird'. To have certain statistics, We set deadline. We could have 8 participants
those who did our pre-task.
Number of participants were under the my estimation. According to gathered statistic, it has been shown us
results to complete pre-task for participants as below:
"18mins duration time, 24 years old average, 3/4 preferred with face to face to teach,
video and diagram as resource to teach someone
else."
Room1 participants undertook face to face approach mostly. Some of them had never had experiences of origami. I briefly introduced available different resources strengths and weak points to teach origami to someone else such as face to face vs video, diagram sequence, video, animation and creases pattern. As group 1 mentioned about learning by drafting and sketching earlier on teaching day, it use different part of brains in terms of kinesthetics, auditory and visual. I told to participants that student's learning style is all different and take advantages how it presents in alternative ways.
What is the meaning of the pedagogical model?
Group 3 agreed on selecting pedagogical models to teach on teaching days. We had long discussions to select popular pedagogical models during preparation time. Understanding of meaning of the pedagogical models are definitely needed to explain on teaching day. It is because pedagogical models are always including theory based analysis. Theory based analysis get along with progression of teaching and learning situation. And pedagogical models can guide to influence teaching plan as framework and to make structure in learning process. I emphasized on what all models needed is such as 'learner's activities, cooperation and interaction'.
Constructivist or Cognitivist?
As 1st of teaching day on 21st of September, group 2 dealt with topic of learning theories and the effect of teaching. And they taught us about 4 learning theories: behaviorism, cognitivism, constructivism and connectivism. It was really helpful to mention and combine with participant's previous knowledges on learning theories and pedagogical models especially on constructivist and cognitivist approaches such as different role of teacher and students, how to approach prior knowledge according to theories and so on.
Cognitive apprenticeship?
Teaching day, I had to mention that cognitive apprenticeship pedagogical models used to use from ancient time to teach and practice about tailors, hands on skills to become master etc. It is influenced by constructivism theory and theory founder of Vygotski (1978) and emphasizing on metacognitive skills think to be visually seen such as reading, writing, maths. Thanks to group 1's teaching methods & learning process topic, their part of 'learning by being coached' were applied from cognitive apprenticeship which could provide prior knowledges to know about cognitive apprenticeship in my opinion. Cognitive apprenticeship methods procedure were introduced briefly modeling, coaching, scaffolding, articulation, reflection and exploration.
Collaborative learning and inquiry-based learning?
Reflection to group 4
Group 4's teaching topic on collaborative learning, Group 1's teaching topic on teaching methods and learning process including learning by enquiry supported to talk about collaborative learning and inquiry-based learning. I got answers from Fatima what I am thinking about dividing responsibility during collaborative learning, when I explained that collaborative learning should not divide on work. but doing together work whole time. I explained to her that it is inevitable to divide on work. Although it is good to have ownership, It needs to work together with caring until the end.
Additional pedagogical models are introduced in short what kind of pedagogical models are as below:
such as case study, experimental learning, flipped learning, team based learning, project based learning, dialogical authentic net learning activity, insightful learning, integrative pedagogy, simulation pedagogy.
Group 3 had issue to approach what to introduce as pedagogical models for teaching days. In my opinions, theory can be vary to make different pedagogical models. If participants on teaching day could understand learning theory can influences to make pedagogical models structure and framework, it will be absolutely good fruitful achievement for me.
How to select pedagogical models and teaching methods?
Group 2's teaching time was beneficial to classify different teaching methods before group3's teaching time started. And Group 1's problem solving learning, enquiry solving learning were in accordance with main points. I was told to participants problem solving learning as teaching methods emphasized why problem is needed, point of strength and challenges. inquiry teaching methods emphasized on strength, challenges and question's technique. And group 4's collaborative learning topic, I was told to participants collaborative learning's challenges, strength, teacher's focus, what is needed to do collaborative learning. I was happy to learn more teaching methods via other groups. Why we chosen 3 teaching methods were to tell competence goal is important combine with pedagogical models and teaching methods together and always go along with different pedagogical models and different teaching methods, because competence goals are vary.
I and group 3 had to admit that we had system issue on Padlet. It causes to delay performance. And I had to skip Kahoot questions as well. We at least could check which models participants have applied such as:
Which models have we applied for this teaching session?
Group 3 approached inquiry based learning model and problem solving learning as teaching methods to think about choosing materials, research on materials, confronting any problem to teach and so on. I wish it was enough for participants and group 3 to understand we need more practice to learn about learning theories and teaching methods to choose properly for the future. Our 45 minutes teaching sessions were very short just to tell about all pedagogical models and teaching methods. Thanks to group 1,2,4, some part of their contents on teaching day overlapped and helped to all to talk and understand about our topics.
Reflection on group 1
: Group 1's teaching topic was how different teaching methods promote individual learning processes. For example teaching methods were such as learning by practicing, learning by teaching and helping , learning by real -world problem solving, learning by critical thinking, learning by inquiry, learning by by being couched, learning by drafting and sketching, learning by playing game and learning by simulation. They gave us questions like " what new learning methods would I like to use for my teaching? I would answer that It depends on what kind of teaching topics are related in and what kinds of students are participating in class. Nevertheless, my favorite teaching method will be learning by teaching and helping. It requires student's active participation not only to teach each other to learn from each other. It has possibility to mix different kinds of teaching methods if needed. It is hard to say to choose only a teaching method for class. Most important is teacher is aware of different kinds of teaching methods and can apply in classroom properly.
Reflection on group 2
: Group 2 had topics on " how vocational teacher tutor and guide to groups or individuals?" and working methods and what are common guiding process? We had to do group work to discuss for 10mins about to prepare cake for OAMK celebration according to topics such as size of cake, color, design and flavor. 10mis were went so fast. And we encountered a bit of rush to make decisions together. But it was successful at the end. Working methods were mentioned to remind us such as contact teaching, group work, independence studying, workplace studying, personalized guidance. They had very good discussion topics. For example, does teacher need always? which is better contents based approach learning or learning based teaching? Teaching for high quality learning or teaching for delivering knowledge? In my opinions, traditional teacher's teaching styles were required to deliver knowledge and contents based learning. But nowadays in Finland, it requires student's active participation without bullying, isolation in order to socially integrate into group in classroom. Teacher's duty will be effective to give guidance and to let students learn properly.
Self evaluation
I need to focus on to have interactions, discussions, caring on participant's comments on teaching time, skills to emphasize on important topics rather reading presentations. Teaching contents to concentrate on qualities then quantities are important. As group work, we need more discussion with open minded and enough research time to decide on topic's related in contents. Thank you for collaborative learning as group. Thank you for reading!

Hi Jin, This is a very informative post. The way to organize your reflection around 5Ws approach (Why, what, how, Which and When) is a classic example of raising a critical debate around any topic and it is a pleasure to read this post.
ReplyDeleteOn the content of the post, In my view, your explanations of different pedagogical models are very clear and easy to understand. The way you have drawn the attention to critical linking points with the work of other presentations, shows the holistic understanding of the issues involved in implementation of teaching tasks.
A very good point is also the acknowledgment of areas to improve in the self-evaluation section.
